The Flower Carpet in Brussels has a blooming history that dates back to 1971. This colorful tradition began as a one-time event, but its immense popularity turned it into a cherished biennial tradition. The brainchild of landscape architect E. Stautemans, the first Flower Carpet adorned the Grand Place in celebration of the 10th anniversary of Brussels’ floral guild. Comprising 100 volunteers and around a million begonias, the floral masterpiece captured the hearts of locals and visitors alike.
Such was its success that the Flower Carpet became a recurring spectacle, turning the Grand Place into a flower village every two years. Each edition features a unique design, often inspired by diverse themes ranging from cultural motifs to global celebrations. The meticulous craftsmanship and artistic flair behind the Flower Carpet have transformed it into a symbol of Brussels’ horticultural and creative prowess, drawing crowds from around the world to witness this ephemeral burst of floral beauty.
